There’s nothing better than getting out and about on your bike and exploring the area around you. It’s the perfect opportunity to take in your surroundings and appreciate what we can often take for granted – even a daily commute can be an enjoyable adventure on two wheels! Unfortunately, living here in the UK can often mean having to cope with adverse weather conditions, even in the height of summer. Whilst we’ve had a lovely couple of weeks for April, it’s kind of inevitable that this time next week it will be a good few degrees cooler and pouring down! Such is life in the UK! As much as I adore getting outside into the fresh air, the unpredictable weather we have means that unless you fancy looking like a drowned rat post-cycle ride, creating an alternative way to keep fit is an absolute must.

Bad weather aside; finding enjoyable indoor workouts for cyclists as a way of exercising at home can also be helpful for those of us who don’t like the gym environment or can’t quite make time in our hectic schedules to go  – or aren’t quite ready to fork out the often expensive monthly fee to make use of one. If you’re struggling to find the motivation to work out, here are just a few ways to do so without having to set foot in a traditional gym.

Invest in Equipment for the Home

What could be better than working out whilst watching your favourite television drama or soap? Investing in high-quality equipment such as an indoor bicycle is the perfect way to work out in the comfort of your own home, which is great for those of us who aren’t quite gym confident. When we come home from a busy working day, we often reserve our spot on the sofa and fail to move for the entirety of the evening – I’m certainly guilty of this! It can be especially dangerous if you’re working day is spent sat down behind a computer screen (yes, that’s me too!). Working out whilst watching TV somehow seems less of a chore and it means you can fit in that important date with your favourite television show too, without compromising on your fitness.

Psycle!

If you’ve not already heard of Soul Cycle, where have you been?! This new approach to indoor cycling is a firm favourite in the US and Psycle is the UK version offering a full body workout on an indoor bike designed to make you smile while you sweat! It’s taking London by storm and there are similar classes spreading around the UK. These new indoor cycling classes are favoured by celebs such as David Beckham, Lady Gaga and Katie Holmes – hey, if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me! And it makes a change from traditional spin! If you’re after a workout that burns calories and fat and tones too without having to sign up to a gym, then classes like Psycle could be what you’re looking for. It’s more intensive than you might think so it’s not for the faint hearted, but if you’re looking for a workout that leaves you full of confidence and feeling amazing, then these classes have it all!

Virtual Fitness Classes

Websites such as YouTube can also offer the perfect solution. Did you know there are actually free (yes free!) workout videos by professional coaches, fitness fanatics and even celebrities on YouTube, which can be especially helpful to those of us who need a helping hand when it comes to finding the motivation to work out. I’ve done many a beginner’s ‘yoga for cyclists’ session via You Tube lately!

OK, so nothing really beats getting out there on two wheels for that feel good factor but there are definitely some good options for those times when you can’t get out on your bike for whatever reason and still need that fitness kick.

    • That’s a great addition to the list Kate. I’m sure a cycling option will be developed at some point….it seems to have pretty much everything else and is great for getting the whole family involved.
